Green Investment Bank

The UK Green Investment Bank is the first bank of its type in the world. Created by the UK Government GIB has been capitalised with an initial £3.8bn of public funds to back green projects on commercial terms and mobilise other private sector capital into the UK’s green economy. GIB is unique as it has a double bottom line: all investments must be green and profitable. Each investment has to meet one of five green purposes and it has a commitment to transparency and catalysing investment through innovation.

GIB has developed an innovative approach to reporting the green impact of its investments. GIB puts environmental performance on a par with financial performance and has created a framework for assessing, monitoring and reporting green impact. This is documented in its publicly available Green Investment Handbook and reported annually in its Green Impact Statements, a Green profit and loss and balance sheet.
